When he wasn’t on set in Western Africa – which was an average of about five days a week – he would be working with the men and boys to create the feeling that they would all look at his character as immortal and untouchable. He channeled the regal, dictatorial charisma in a series of workshops with the actors and stunt performers who made up the legion of the Immortan’s loyal-to-the-death War Boys. “A touch of all those mad people, and then there’s a touch of the unmentionable, Macbeth,” he said. Keays-Byrne, who was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s, also saw a bit of the Bard’s great crazy rulers, such as King Lear, in the Immortan. Keays-Byrne used a war club he inherited after his mother-in-law died to help get into character for "Fury Road." He decorated and personalized it to suit the role. “There he is, establishing a corporate empire, and that's exactly what he's doing.” "The Immortan is the epitome of, as what we would say now, progress,” the actor said. ![]() “I see the Toecutter as sort of a victimized nomad, victimized by a world that tries to put up fences and turns out to be sort of a police state.” The Immortan, on the other hand, sees himself as a renaissance man trying to rebuild the world through essential projects such as water pumping and developing hydroponic crops. “Basically, I always try to think of the character I’m playing not as a bad guy,” Keays-Byrne said. Villainy aside, the two characters are vastly different with one main exception: how the actor approached the roles. In the critically acclaimed new film, he portrays the Immortan Joe, a grotesque tyrant who rules through fear, charisma and control of natural resources. In 1979's “Mad Max," Keays-Byrne played the Toecutter, the leader of a roving gang who terrorizes people while society collapses. ![]()
